In ââ¬Å"Hymn to Intellectual Beauty,â⬠Shelley strips the Spirit of Beauty of the associations people assign to it so that one is able to see it purely for what it is. He denounces the use of religious terms to describe the Spirit, making the Spirit unfamiliar as most people would engage with it in religious terms. ââ¬Å"Hymn to Intellectual Beautyâ⬠i s an ironic twist on the traditional hymn, and instead of praising religion and God, it removes the mask of habit that religion places on the Spirit of Beauty. Defamiliarization is a literary technique that reveals the hidden beauty of things by making them unfamiliar. The technique accomplishes this by presenting the thing and making it appear strange so that oneââ¬â¢s perception of it changes. The term was coined by Viktor Shklovsky, who believed that ââ¬Å"the purpose of art is to impart the sensation of things as they are perceived, and not as they are knownâ⬠(Shklovsky). The literary devices used by artists are different from everyday language, which expose the objects and present them in a new light. In this new light, oneââ¬â¢s perception of the object shifts, and its sensation is recovered. Shklovsky argues that the general laws of perception [indicate that] perception becomes habitual, it becomes automaticâ⬠¦[and] ultimately even the essence of what it was is forgotten.â⬠Defamiliarization restores this essence and takes off the veil,â⬠revealing the amazing things which surround us and which our senses u sually register mechanicallyâ⬠(Cocteau). Perception becomes automatic when one engages with the object habitually, as Jean Cocteau explains: ââ¬Å"Suddenly, as if in a flash, we see the dog, the coach, the house for the first time. Shortly afterwards habit erases again this potent image. We pet the dog, we call the coach, we live in a house; we do not see them anymore.â⬠Cocteau argues that when one engages with the objects and associates habit with them, one ceases to see the essence of the object. Shklovsky states: ââ¬Å"After we see an object several times, we begin to recognize it. The object is in front of us and we know about it, but we do not see it hence, we cannot say anything significant about it.â⬠Once the object is automatized, it loses its beauty and newness, and just becomes another thing in oneââ¬â¢s everyday life. The perception and sensation of the object is lost. In ââ¬Å"Hymn to Intellectual Beauty,â⬠the speaker suggests that in a way, religion habitualizes the perception of the Spirit of Beauty. Religion is a way of engaging with and rationalizing the unknown and sublime parts of life. In ââ¬Å"Hymn before Sun-rise, in the Vale of Chamouni,â⬠Coleridge attributes the sublime beauty of Mont Blanc to God and heaven, as ââ¬Å"the dilating Soul, enrapt, transfused,/Into the mighty vision passingââ¬âthere/As in her natural form, swelled vast to Heaven! (Coleridge 21-23). The speaker in this poem makes sense of the sublime mountains of Mont Blanc by crediting them to God, the ultimate creator capable of creating such beauty. The speaker asks for all to ââ¬Å"join [the] Hymn,â⬠and to praise God and the heavens for the beauty of the natural world (28). This rationalization of beauty can be compared to the habituation and automatization of objects in familiarization. The speaker in ââ¬Å"Hymn to Intellectual Beautyâ⬠s uggests that labelling this sublime interaction with the nonmaterial Intellectual beauty with ââ¬Å"the name of God and ghosts and Heaven/Remain the records of their [sage and poet] vain endeavourâ⬠(Shelley 27-28). The speaker suggests that trying to name the Spirit of Beauty is futile because it does not capture the essence of the Spirit. The Spirit cannot be familiarized, because it cannot be named. The speaker constantly calls this shadow of some unseen Powerâ⬠(1) by different names, such as ââ¬Å"Beautyâ⬠(13), ââ¬Å"Lovelinessâ⬠(71), and ââ¬Å"Spiritâ⬠(83). This invisible power cannot have one name because even that would begin the process of habitualizing it. This power is in and of itself ââ¬Å"beauty,â⬠because its very essence is the act of defamiliarizing and unveiling objects that are fatigued by perception of habit. The poem defamiliarizes the feeling of powerful ecstasy one feels at a nonmaterial beauty that is too often familiariz ed with God and heaven. It reveals the beauty of this ââ¬Å"unseen Powerâ⬠and removes the mask of religion as a way of making sense of something and normalizing it. The paper ââ¬Å"Eating Christmas in the Kalahariâ⬠, written by Richard Lee, it describes his experience living with the Kung Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert in south central Africa. The story goes into depth about the experiences and cultural differences that caused him to almost quit his three year study. The study serves as documentation of another instance of how different societies of people distinguish themselves from one another and how they conduct themselves on a daily basis. Lee is a believer in Christmas and therefore feels that itââ¬â¢s a day of friendship and brotherly love. He decided to buy the largest and meatiest ox that money could buy all for the corporation of the Bushmen for the past year. After purchasing the ox the Bushmen teased him that he purchased a ââ¬Å"bag of bonesâ⬠. They filled his saying that the ox was old and had no fat on it. When ââ¬Å"Whiteyâ⬠went hunting with his friend he was once again teased whether he hit his prey or not. His peers were teasing him in order to keep him in his place so he doesnââ¬â¢t become arrogant. In the Bushmen culture arrogance is considered to be a leading factor in killing each other. Lee is a social anthropologist working with the Coon Bushmen. He came to study hunting and gathering substance economy. For Lee it was essential not to provide food or share his food or participate in their gathering. However he could hand out tobacco and medical supply. Often in the story Lee was accused of being stingy and cold hearted. In the Bushmen eyes he was considered to be a miser. They felt this way because he has a two month supply of food yet they donââ¬â¢t even have a daysââ¬â¢ worth. Bushmen live straight off the land. I think all of this is an example of status. The other key term is mechanical and social solidarity. I think the best example of this is the fact that Lee doesnââ¬â¢t have to hunt or grow his food. He is considered to be wealthy since he has two monthsââ¬â¢ worth of food. The Bushmen have to live day to day hunting for their food. They actually have to work for the food they eat. When the ââ¬Å"Whiteyâ⬠decides that one day out of the whole year he wants to share his food and feed the Bushmen they arenââ¬â¢t necessarily thankful. The Bushmen share food with each other all year long. Personally I think the Bushmen look at Lee like he is greedy. Gemeinschaft is translated as community and society. The story relates to this term in many ways. Lee is an outsider of the Bushmen community. He is an anthropologist that is there to observe and the only thing he can offer them is cigarettes and medicine. Lee cannot interfere in their food gathering and their way of life. When Lee decides to feed them for the Christmas customer he expects gratitude and praise. Instead the Bushmen tease him and are somewhat derisive to him. Lee begins to doubt himself because of all the things they have filled his head with. Personally I think that the Bushmen envy Lee; therefore they are sort of cruel to him. It states that he is the only source of tobacco of tobacco in a thousand miles. Because of this I think they hate that they have to rely on him for the supplies he can offer. I think that the Bushmen are grateful for the fact Lee has medicine and tobacco, but they prefer to do things on their own. Although Lee feels down about himself and is second guessing his ox it is all actually a misunderstanding. Lee being an anthropologist living with an unfamiliar group of people that have much cultural differences misunderstandings are bound to happen. When he is confused about why he isnââ¬â¢t receiving the gratitude that he was expecting for slaughtering the ox it arises a conflict. In our culture when someone presents an act of kindness we are appreciative, but in the Kung Bushmen culture it is completely different. Instead of the gratitude they ridicule and degrade the gift. The reason they act so for lack of a better word ââ¬Å"rudeâ⬠, is because they donââ¬â¢t want no one man to perceive himself greater than others just because he can bring home food. In the story one of the members of the Kung Bushmen says, ââ¬Å"We insult men after they make a kill because of arrogance. â⬠They feel that when a young man kills so much meat he starts to think of himself of as chief or a big man. Once someone starts feeling like this they begin to think everyone else is beneath them. In conclusion ââ¬Å"Eating Christmas in the Kalahariâ⬠was a great story teaching us about our culture as well as vividly describing the way the Bushmen culture think. They are a society that strongly holds onto humility. In their culture bragging and boasting leads to killing; therefore taunting will keep everyone in their place. Although they made Lee feel bad about his gift, I think that they truly were appreciative for everything he has provided to them. They just show their appreciation in a completely different way, which Lee later realizes and understands thatââ¬â¢s part of the way they live.
